The great Mor Khan is arriving from the city to choose actors for his new film.  The birds of the jungle are in a flutter.  What should they do to bag a role?  The smart city crow steps in to help – and also settle scores with Vulture.

With filmdom as its backdrop, the author wittingly casts actual bird species and builds the story around their looks and characteristics.   Without stating facts as in a fact book, she cleverly uses dialogue to bring these out as in, Knock on wood, knock on wood!, exclaimed White Bellied Woodpecker or Let’s ask Jungle Crow.  He has cousins all over the city.

The author goes a step further using the audition to showcase the abilities of the birds as the Red Wattled Lapwing’s broke-wing trick.

The illustrations are delightful, colourful and authentic.  Interestingly placed on each page, they enhance the visual appeal of the book.

The book uses a dual approach. Not only do children learn about the different bird species of India but the book also reinforces certain core values of self-esteem, knowing who you are, and making the most of what you have.

With a package like this it is a must read.

This story is also available in Hindi, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Marathi, Gujarati and Bangla.

Witty and sophisticated!

This is a lovely book, that can be read at two levels. At the child's level, it's bright, colourful, fun, subtly informative, and has a great storyline. At the adult level (so you don't get bored reading it over and over to your kids/grandkids) it's witty and sophisticated and takes cunning potshots at Bollywood! I loved this book and so did my 20-something daughters and my 82 year old mother.
