Several young mothers I know have been complaining about the lack of good chapter books for younger readers on the Indian book scene. The Monster Hunters by Parineeta Shetty, from the ‘Duckbill Hole’ series, just hits the spot! It is short, easy to read, very engaging, funny, and has lovely b&w illustrations by Pooja Pottenkulam.

Plus, it’s gender-neutral. Boys and girls alike can identify with Abhay and Nitya, best friends doing a school project together. The project is an exciting if frustrating one – hunting down a monster; and by exercising their ingenuity, they manage to turn failure into success.

I loved the dialogues too. Abhay’s father’s theories about Neil Armstrong, especially, are hilarious. It all adds up to a family life that’s zany, squabbly in an affectionate way, and so familiar.

This book is a real treat for the kids!
